Etobicoke’s Civic Centre is getting a major upgrade. Here’s what it looked like then, and what it’ll look like now

The Etobicoke Civic Centre (ECC) is getting a big makeover thanks to new redevelopments in the works.

According to the City of Toronto, the new building will be located within the newly redeveloped Etobicoke Civic Centre Precinct, formerly known as the Westwood Theatre Lands.

Located at 3755 Bloor Street West, the ECC is described as a “mixed-use building comprising a wide range of community focused programs and services. The building is arranged in a series of tall volumes towards the north, housing the municipal offices, while the lower floors towards the south contain all the public functions.”

The original building was built in 1958.

“The moderate low rise stone campus is an example of a unique emerging Toronto modernism, tied to traditional civic materials but using modern design. The complex was designed by local architectural firm Shore and Moffat,” according to Architectural Conservancy Ontario (ACO).

“The space was also home to Etobicoke City Council until amalgamation in 2000, when it became part of the offices used by the City of Toronto, and is home to the Etobicoke York Community Council.”

Today, the space will reach new heights and be a sight to see.

“The new ECC provides a microclimate that encourages people to engage in the public realm. Through its architectural expression and inviting street presence, the ECC will stand out as an innovative and unique building in Toronto,” the city’s website reads.

The new space is also a 500,000-square-foot project that has been in the making for years.

It will be home to retail stores and 2,700 homes, 900 of which will meet Toronto’s affordable housing criteria, according to the Globe and Mail.

The state-of-the-art space will also have a geoexchange heating and cooling systems.

“It’s a fairly novel way of heating and cooling buildings using a green technology that will help the city meet its carbon-reduction goals,” Toronto Councillor Amber Morley told the news outlet.

The new space is expected to open to residents as early as this month.
